The End of New Zealand

Christchurch, New Zealand November 14-15, 2007

Arrival in Christchurch is anti-climactic because it generally marks a return to the urban setting and the end of New Zealand travels. Most travelers usually arrive in Auckland on the north island and travel south as we did, departing from the international airport in Christchurch. Our only business in Christchurch is tracking down a replacement backpack for Heather before our flight in a few days. After weeks of frustrating calls and emails to Tenba Backpacks and their sole U.S. distributor with no assistance, our local dealer Arlington Camera stepped up to bat to save us. Heather’s equipment bag tore open beyond repair only three weeks into our journey and it would be impossible to carry on an airplane. Bill Porter came to the rescue (Thanks Bill and Arlington Camera!) and arranged a replacement bag shipped next day air at no cost to meet us in Christchurch. Unfortunately the saga didn’t end there as UPS made an error and labeled with shipment NL for Netherlands instead of NZ for New Zealand. We spent the previous ten days tracking the package and preparing for the possibility that the bag would arrive after our flight to Australia.

Luck still shining on us, we got the backpack the day before our departure flight and realized the replacement had already visited more countries than us. Sorted, repacked and ready, we depart for the warmer weather of the Australian Sunshine Coast and donate our ski hats to the hostel free bin.

On our last day in Christchurch, what a surprise- we ran into Bob and Sophie from Wanaka!  There was no time to cook another gourmet dinner, but we did manage to have a quick beer with the pair before Sophie headed to the airport. Had Sophie not missed her flight home the day before, we would have missed them.

Goodbye to the locals that have their own thing going for them (Dad you’ll love this one).

Goodbye to our car that got us everywhere.

  1. Hey guys! It’s great to see and read all of your excursions. I hope you guys are doing well. I don’t suppose you guys will be making it to the Davey Derby this year? That’s too bad. It won’t be the same without you two.

    Happy Holidays!

  2. I am glad to see you two are having lots of fun!!!

  3. Hey guys! or is that hey y’all?

We’re so impressed with this blog and shall be using it as our mini tour gude for NZ im sure!
I hope you are both well and havent done any serious injury lugging your bags around to your next stop!

Where are you at the moment?

Townsville (what a name) was cool, did an amazing dive to SS Yongala, the wreck about 2 hours from the coast. The ship is now in effect a reef and the marine life was amazing! We saw our first biiiig turtles, a leopard shark and fish as big as Steph (well nearly).
We’re now in Airlie Beach, after finding out there were literally no beds left in the town, we borrowed a tent and headed to a campsite. The tent turned out to be big enough for 5 people, complete with broken poles and mud/dirt inside! But hey, never looka gift horse in the mouth and all that, at least we managed a few hours kip.

Next up is a sailing trip around the Whitsunday islands!

Ok, so i’ll sign off now, great to meet you guys. Thankyou so much for helping me out when i needed it, very much appreciated
    Catch you soon!
    Fiona

  4. Hello Ted and Heather: I’m editing late tonight and while my tapes are digitizing I’ve enjoyed reading the blog and catching up with the latest on your journey. I especially liked the photos from the starry night at the farm. Beautiful! And for as long as I have known your two I have never seen you both having such a blast. Travel suits you! When you “visit” the states next you’ll have to teach us the Drunken Jinga game. Ha!! What a riot. Safe travels and looking forward to the next entry from your blog. -Mandy
